Description
A male hooded merganser swimming through a wetland area. The male hooded merganser is a sight to behold because of its black and white patterns and chestnut colored flanks.
They have a black head with a white patch that varies in size when the crest is lowered or raised. Its fan-like hood is a key identifying feature. Its diet consists of aquatic insects, crayfish, and small fish.
Look for Hooded Mergansers on small bodies of freshwater. In summer, these small ducks nest in holes in trees, often near freshwater ponds or rivers. For winter, they move to larger bodies of freshwater, marshes, and protected saltwater bays.
