Description
A red shouldered hawk in its hunting pose while perched on a small branch. I was hoping it would catch a mouse or something similar. It ended pulling a few grubs out of the ground.
The red shouldered hawk is a medium size bird of prey that is native to the eastern portion of North America and also along the coast of California and northern to northeastern-central Mexico. This hawk is typically found in tall woods and water and is one of the most distinctively marked common hawks. It has barred reddish-peachy underparts and a strongly banded tail.
They hunt prey ranging from mice to frog and snakes. They are slightly smaller than the red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawks are dark above with rufous streaking. Reddish patches on the wrist and upper back give the appearance of red shoulders. The underside is light with rufous barring on breast and belly. The tail is dark brown with four or five white bands and a white tip. The immature bird has less coloration at the shoulders and a tail that is indistinctly barred.
