Description
An Eastern Bluebird showing off its stunning colors while perched on top of a nest box. The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a small North American migratory thrush found in open woodlands, farmlands and orchards.
The males like the one in the picture have a bright blue back and head with a warm red-brown breast while the female is grayish blue on the back and wings with a rusty red breast. Not only do I love these birds for their appearance, I also enjoy their song.
Fun facts about the Eastern Bluebird include that they are cavity nesters, meaning they build their nest in tree cavities or nest boxes. They are insectivores where their diet is mostly insects and small invertebrates. They also mate for life.
Did you know they are the state bird of Missouri and New York.
