Description
Went out to the Eastern Part of the North Carolina to see bears for the first time, It was truly a rewarding experience. Taken at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Manns Harbor, North Carolina.
The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is a 152,000-acre National Wildlife Refuge located in eastern North Carolina along the Atlantic Coast. It was established on March 14, 1984, to preserve and protect a unique wetland habitat type—the pocosin—and its associated wildlife species.
Alligator River has the highest concentration of Black Bears on America’s eastern seaboard, however it is not a zoo. Nor is it set up like your typical National Park.
American black bears (Ursus americanus) are the most common and widely distributed species of bears in North America. They can be found anywhere from forested areas to the beach to the alpine zone. Black bears will eat almost anything. They are omnivores, meaning that they eat both plants and animals. Their curved claws help them climb trees to search for food, but they cannot dig for food as well as a brown bear. Black bears are very smart and can identify food not only by smell but also by appearance
