Description
An eastern cottontail rabbit who is one of what I called the backyard bunnies enjoying the springtime weather. I generally see them during the early evening hours but will see them out in the middle of the day at times as well. When I do see them, I go outside and just watched them from the back deck enjoying themselves. I will snap a few pictures when they do something cute or just relaxing the grass sniffing around for the clover they enjoy.
Eastern Cottontails like to live at the edges of open areas. In fact, they are rarely found in dense forests or open grassland and according to the Humane Society they are critical members of our ecosystem, rabbits form underground burrows that strengthen our soil health and they serve as a food source for many larger predators. Their valuable place in the food web (as well as human threats such as habitat loss, trapping and cars) means they often don’t live long, but most live somewhere between one and nine years. (Domestic rabbits live about five to 10 years.)
